Why do ceiling speakers go unused, and what fixes it?
In a lot of homes, the ceiling speakers go quiet because the old receiver or wall keypad driving them is hard to use, plays one source everywhere, or has died. The Amp Multi replaces that gear. It takes up to eight speaker wire runs, groups them into as many as four rooms and puts each room in the Sonos app.
Each room gets its own music. Your kids can stream Spotify in the basement while you play Apple Music through AirPlay in the kitchen. Up to four streams run at once, one per zone, and you pick them from the same app that runs your other Sonos speakers.
One unit also does the work of four regular Sonos Amps: one box, one network cable and one shelf space instead of four. It has no fan, so it can sit in a closet or basement rack with some airflow, and you won't hear it.

What does the Amp Multi change day to day?
It gives each part of your home its own music, controlled from your phone, through the speakers you own. Your family stops arguing over one playlist, the old keypads and receivers come out, and each room gets sound tuned to its size and layout. We connect it by Ethernet and tune each output before we leave.
Everyone hears what they want
Your podcast stays in the kitchen while the kids' playlist stays in the basement. The amp streams up to four different sources at once, one per zone, from the Sonos app, AirPlay 2 or Spotify Connect.
Each room sounds right for its space
A long open-concept living room and a small powder room get their own settings. ProTune gives every output its own 10-band EQ, gain, delay and high-pass filter, and applies Sonos tuning when it recognizes Sonos Architectural speakers.
Your records reach the whole house
Drop the needle in the living room and hear it on the deck. Two RCA analog inputs can feed any zone, and a USB-C input works with the Sonos Line-In Adapter.
Nothing to hear but the music
You can put it in a closet or basement rack and forget about it. The amplifier has no fan and draws 5.4 W at idle with Wi-Fi off. It needs some airflow and a room between 0 and 35 °C.
One app for every speaker you own
Your ceiling speakers sit next to the Sonos speakers you already have. Each zone appears alongside your other Sonos rooms, so you can group the patio with the kitchen for a party in a tap.
Bass where you want it
Movie night in the basement and dinner upstairs can both get proper low end. One zone can use the wired RCA sub output, and each zone can pair with its own wireless Sonos Sub.
What does living with it look like?
Each room plays what the people in it chose, and nobody has to ask you how the system works. You open the Sonos app, tap a room and press play. Below are three ordinary moments in a GTA home with four zones.
A weekday morning
At 7 a.m. the kitchen plays the morning news, the upstairs bathroom plays your teenager's Spotify, and the home office stays quiet until your first call. Nobody touches a keypad. Each person uses their own phone.
Hosting a dinner party
Guests walk into one playlist across the kitchen, dining room and patio, grouped with a tap. When dessert comes out, you turn the patio down and leave the dining room as it was. A friend with a song request sends it by AirPlay.
The backyard in summer
The outdoor speakers carry the ball game while the kids swim, and the living room keeps your playlist inside. The amp sits in the basement, silent and out of sight, and you stay by the pool instead of running in to fix the music.
Which homes get the most from it?
Homes with three or four areas of wired speakers get the most from it, above all where those speakers sit unused or run off aging equipment. If each room's speaker wire runs back to one closet or basement, we can test the wire, land it on the amp and tune each room.
Builder-installed ceiling speakers
Maybe your builder put speakers in the kitchen, family room and basement, with the wire running back to one spot. If so, the amplifier gives each area its own music, and you keep the speakers and wire already in your walls.
Homes with outdoor speakers
Patio and backyard speakers become a zone of their own next to the indoor rooms. One unit runs up to 24 Sonos Architectural speakers, three per channel, so it can cover a large yard.
Older whole-home audio systems
A rack of old amplifiers and wall keypads nobody uses can give way to one 1.5U box. Your family controls every room from the Sonos app and never has to learn the old keypads.
When it is not the right buy: for one or two rooms, the regular Sonos Amp at $1,049 is the better choice. If your speakers are wired in series, daisy-chained from room to room, we have to rewire them as separate home runs before each room can become its own zone. We quote that rewiring separately.
When does one Amp Multi beat four Sonos Amps?
When three or four rooms of ceiling speakers are wired back to one spot. One box takes the place of four regular Sonos Amps ($1,049 each): one network port instead of four, one shelf or rack space instead of a stack, and per-output tuning the regular Amp does not offer.
For one or two rooms, the regular Amp is still the better buy.

What installation does not cover: mounting or cutting in speakers, and running new speaker wire or network cable. The installation quote assumes your speakers are already in and each pair has its own cable back to where the amplifier goes. If they are not, we quote that work separately as part of a full Sonos installation. If a run fails testing, we show you which one and quote the repair before touching it.
Why does Sonos sell the Amp Multi only through installers?
Because someone has to set it up properly. This amplifier needs a person to decide which speakers share a channel, check the load on each one, assign eight outputs to zones and tune every output for the room it feeds. A regular Sonos Amp needs none of that. That is why Sonos sells it through installation partners.
Zone planning
Eight outputs can be four stereo rooms, eight mono spaces, or a mix. We map each speaker run to a zone before anything gets connected, so the kitchen never plays in the bedroom.
Speaker load
Three speakers on one channel is fine with Sonos Architectural. Older or third-party speakers can drop the load below what the amplifier accepts. We measure first, then wire.
ProTune on every output
A ceiling speaker in a tiled bathroom and one in a carpeted den need different settings. We set EQ, gain, delay and the high-pass filter per output instead of leaving them flat.
Wired and ventilated
We connect it by Ethernet, never Wi-Fi alone, and place it where the fanless chassis can shed heat. A closed cabinet with a router and a cable box is the wrong spot. No port nearby? Network installation adds one.
Do you need the Amp Multi Rack Mount?
Only if the amplifier lives in a 19-inch equipment rack. It is 1.5U tall on its own, and Sonos makes a matching 2U mount that leaves space above and below the unit for airflow. It is sold with the amplifier.
On a shelf, in a utility room or on top of a network cabinet, you can skip it. If you have a rack but no room in it, we can tell you on the phone whether it will fit.
What happens during an Amp Multi installation?
One technician, one visit. Older wiring works as long as each run tests clean and goes back to one spot.
Test the existing runs
We identify and label each speaker cable at the equipment location, check it for shorts and confirm each pair is home-run.
Place or rack the amplifier
On a shelf with room to breathe, or in your rack on the Amp Multi Rack Mount.
Land the speaker wire
Each run goes to its output. We check the load on every channel before powering up.
Connect and add to Sonos
Ethernet to your network, then the amplifier joins your existing Sonos system or starts a new one.
Build and tune the zones
Up to four named rooms, with ProTune EQ, gain, delay and high-pass set on each output.
Walk you through it
We play every zone with you, show you grouping in the app and label the outputs for the next person.
