UniFi Protect is a surveillance application that runs on the UniFi OS console, the same device that manages your network. It is not a separate platform, a cloud service, or a monitoring subscription. Cameras connect over PoE Cat6, and footage stores locally on the console or a connected UNVR.

The app gives you remote access from anywhere without a recurring fee for core functionality. Because Protect lives inside the same ecosystem as your network and access control, a door event can surface a camera view. You can cross-reference a network alert with footage. Should a new UniFi build use Wi-Fi 7, or stay on Wi-Fi 6?

Most new builds should use the U7 generation: U7 Pro in the standard access point slot, U7 Pro Max where a zone needs eight spatial streams and 6 GHz capacity. The price gap over U6 Pro is small, and it is the generation your devices already ship with.

That last point is the practical one. Apple shipped Wi-Fi 7 in the iPhone 16 line, with the iPhone 15 Pro and the M4 MacBook and iPad range on Wi-Fi 6E, Samsung shipped it across the Galaxy S24 and S25 generations, and most premium laptops sold from late 2024 onward include it.

Inside the property, the U7 Pro adds the 6 GHz band, which is uncongested in almost every residential neighbourhood and carries gigabit-plus throughput at short range. The U7 Pro Max adds a dedicated spectral scanning radio for the busiest zones.

U6 Pro still has a place: a basement gym access point serving a few machines, or a hallway carrying mostly phone traffic. We mix generations where it makes sense rather than defaulting to the newest part.
